Osun police arrest three over alleged assassination attempt on APC campaign DG

• Warns police on roadblocks against extortion

The Osun State Police Command yesterday said it had arrested three suspects over an alleged assassination attempt on Hon. Wole Oke, the campaign Director-General for the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship election.

The Commissioner of Police, CP Ibrahim Gotan, said investigations were still ongoing and that anyone found culpable would face the full weight of the law.

The suspects arrested are Olamilekan Oriyomi (24), Ayotunde Ikupolati Ojo (44) and Fakinleye Femi (31).

CP Gotan explained that on Tuesday, 30 June 2026, Hon. Wole Oke and other party members paid homage to the Ajalaye of Ipetu-Ijesa, Oba (Dr) Agunbiade Oke, at his palace and later proceeded to the Town Hall in Ipetu-Ijesa to meet with political party members.

He stated that shortly after the meeting, a group of individuals suspected to be political thugs and members of the Eiye Confraternity, allegedly led by Olamilekan Oriyomi, obstructed the exit route of the visiting entourage.

Gotan said the suspect allegedly brought out an English Beretta pistol loaded with four rounds of live ammunition, intending to shoot the lawmaker, but was promptly spotted and subdued by the Divisional Police Officer (DPO).

The situation, he said, caused panic, but police officers quickly responded, apprehended Olamilekan Oriyomi and recovered the firearm and ammunition, while other suspects fled.

Gotan said that following intelligence-led operations and sustained efforts by the Violent Crime Response Unit (VCRU) of the command, police arrested two more suspects on 1 July 2026 at Ipetu-Ijesa. They are Ayotunde Ikupolati Ojo (44) and Fakinleye Femi (31).

According to the CP, Oriyomi allegedly confessed that he obtained the gun from Busuyi Akinwole Ikupolati, also known as “Omo-Akin”, who is at large, and that his statement also implicated some influential figure(s) who are under investigation.

Police said efforts were ongoing to apprehend the fleeing suspects.

CP Gotan also warned Divisional Police Officers (DPOs) mounting roadblocks at night to properly supervise their officers and prevent extortion.

He reacted to reports that some officers were turning dual carriageways into single carriageways at night and using the situation to extort residents, saying the officers would be monitored to ensure they carried out their duties professionally and in accordance with the law.
