The Osun State Police Command on Tuesday said it had arrested one suspect following a gun duel in which three police officers sustained gunshot injuries.
Parading the suspect on behalf of the Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Gotan, the Police Public Relations Officer, Abiodun Ojelabi, said the suspect was arrested in connection with the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) crisis in Osun State.
Ojelabi said a distress call was received by the command at about 5:30 p.m. on Monday, reporting that a group of hoodlums were shooting sporadically in the Oke-Ijetu area of Osogbo.
He said: “A team of Anti-Robbery and Violent Crime Response Unit (VCRU) personnel swung into action. On getting to the scene, the hoodlums, suspected to be members of a faction loyal to one Wakili Alowonle, started shooting at the police operatives, during which three security operatives sustained varying degrees of gunshot injuries and are responding to treatment in hospital.
“During the encounter, the operatives professionally arrested one suspect, Adedeji Saheed Opeyemi, who confessed that he was informed by Sibi that he (Sibi) received a call from Alowonle that they should meet at the Oke-Ijetu area of Osogbo. Also, Sibi came to meet him with two pump-action guns and handed one over to him. He is assisting the police with investigations aimed at arresting others still at large.”
The suspect reportedly confessed that he was holding a gun given to him by one “Sibi”, who came from the Ife Garage area.
“We learnt that some people wanted to take over the garage and the certificate we have is four years. We were surprised when we got to the garage and discovered that mobile policemen were there with them. We couldn’t do anything.
“Our leaders mobilised us on the platform that we should meet at Ijetu for a meeting. When we got there, our leader, Comrade Wakili Nurudeen Alowonle Ola Mummy, was not there. He spoke to us on the telephone and told us that we should not cause trouble but stay alert. He said we should not fight anybody until the governor gives directives.
“Policemen met us. Five of us were holding guns. I cannot shoot, but the gun was given to me by Sibi.

“Our people were arguing that those who wanted to take over the garage should be arrested and they started shooting at policemen.
“I held the gun. I didn’t shoot. I told them that we cannot fight government and I handed the gun to the police. Sibi, who gave me the gun, came from Ile-Ife and I came from Station Road,” Opeyemi added.
Similarly, the police arrested three suspected motorcycle snatchers. They are Kamarudeen Babatunde, 39; Lekan Usman, 22; and Moses Oyebade, 40.
The police said that on 19 July 2026, at about 7:30 a.m., a distress call was received from a complainant reporting that his Bajaj motorcycle, with registration number MEK 987 VU, had been snatched from his rider in the Osunjela area of Osogbo.
“Upon receiving the information, police operatives of the command swung into action and, through intelligence analysis, the motorcycle was traced to Modakeke, where it was recovered at about 9:30 a.m.
“Two suspects were arrested, namely Kamarudeen Babatunde and Lekan Usman, alongside their receiver, Moses Oyebade, of Ondo town, Ondo State. All the suspects and the recovered motorcycle are already in custody for further investigation.”
The police also arrested two suspected political thugs, Alawode Ridwan, 26, and Ajibade Ahmed, 33.
According to the police, “On 16/07/2026 at about 1420hrs, a distress call was received that, the above named suspect were causing mayhem around Amadia Area, Osogbo. Police Detective swiftly swung into action and apprehended the suspects.”
Ojelabi said the suspects would be charged in court upon the completion of investigations.
