Osun election: Osun provides opposition template for 2027 – G100

The G100 has congratulated Governor Ademola Adeleke on his re-election as Governor of Osun State, stating that his victory has provided the opposition with a template for the 2027 general election.

The G100, a group of politicians pushing for a single opposition presidential candidate for the 2027 polls, said in a statement by Salihu Lukman that the significance of what happened in Osun State goes beyond the re-election of Governor Adeleke.

The group commended the leaders and candidates of opposition parties for working together during the election, as well as the people of Osun State for their determination and courage.

“We also commend the leaders and candidates of the opposition parties who, recognising the larger stakes in this election, set aside their individual ambitions, mobilised their structures and supporters, and worked together in support of Governor Adeleke. Their decision was an affirmation that there are moments when the greater democratic interest must come before the ambitions of any individual or political party.

“The significance of what has happened in Osun goes far beyond the re-election of one Governor. Osun has provided a template for 2027.

“For weeks now, the G100 has argued that Nigeria’s opposition does not suffer from a shortage of popular support. Its greatest challenge is fragmentation. Osun has now demonstrated, in practical terms, what becomes possible when opposition forces recognise a common objective, make the necessary compromises and consolidate their strengths behind a viable democratic choice,” it stated.

Furthermore, the G100 noted that “Governor Adeleke’s victory is an important lesson here for every opposition leader looking towards 2027. The governorship candidates who stepped down and supported Governor Adeleke were each entitled to pursue their own ambitions. They chose instead to ask a more important question: what outcome best serves the people and strengthens the democratic cause?

“That is precisely the question the national opposition must now confront. Nigeria is bigger than any candidate, any ambition and any political party. If opposition leaders genuinely believe that the country requires a different direction in 2027, then they must demonstrate the same courage, restraint and willingness to compromise that has now produced this outcome in Osun.

“Osun has shown the pathway. The task now is to take that spirit of cooperation to the national stage.”
