The African Democratic Congress (ADC) governorship candidate in Osun State, Dr. Najeem Salaam, paid a courtesy visit to the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, on Thursday to seek support ahead of the August 15 governorship election.

During the visit, Salaam sought the monarch’s blessings and promised that, if elected, his administration would restore the dignity and constitutional recognition of traditional rulers across the state.

He said traditional institutions, which he described as “indigenous systems,” hold solutions to many of the region’s social challenges.

“Kabiyesi, I have God and you. I believe with that, all things are possible. I have come to seek your royal blessings. If I am privileged to emerge as governor, I will ensure that the lost values of our society are restored,” Salaam told the Ooni.

The former Speaker of the Osun State House of Assembly said his government would prioritise the welfare of traditional rulers and integrate them into governance for sustainable development. He noted his past advocacy on issues affecting traditional leaders, including local government allocations.

On security, Salaam proposed creating a community-based policing structure that would leverage the traditional institution, involving local hunters and vigilante groups under the supervision of traditional rulers to strengthen grassroots security.

Responding, the Ooni of Ife commended Salaam for his humility and respect for tradition, describing him as an “Omoluabi” whose leadership reflects integrity and cultural consciousness.

The monarch urged Salaam to remain committed to the people and to maintain respect for traditional institutions, stressing the importance of collaboration between political officeholders and traditional rulers for sustainable development and lasting peace.

The Ooni offered royal blessings to Dr. Salaam, praying for divine guidance and success in his political ambition.
