The Pro-Chancellor and Chairman, Governing Council of Osun State University (UNIOSUN), Yusuf Ali, SAN, has expressed displeasure over the continuous closure of universities saying four years of courses now becoming eight years.
Ali who is the Chairman of the Committee of Pro-Chancellors of State-owned Universities (COPSUN), commended UNIOSUN for ensuring and sustaining the stability and continuity of the calendar, saying it is not bad to have reasonable demands but not to abandon primary duties.
He stated this during the 3rd Candido Da Rocha Annual Memorial Lecture at the Osogbo campus of the university.
He said, “some of us attended Nigerian universities. The only thing that can extend your day when we were in university was when you failed. But today, four-year courses are becoming eight years, not because you failed but because lecturers decided to abandon the classroom.”
Meanwhile, a Professor of Accountancy, Lawyer Obara, has suggested legislation with strict punishment to back up Treasury Single Account (TSA) implementation as part of measures to end corruption in Nigeria.
He stated this in his lecture titled: “Treasury Single Account and Economic Development in Nigeria: The Ethical Accounting Question.
Prof Obara who is a lecturer at the Department of Accountancy, Rivers State University, Port-Harcourt, posited that TSA is capable of curbing corruption if legislation can be made with strict punishment for whoever fails to comply with it.
He expressed displeasure over the recent ranking of Nigeria as the fourth country in the world with the highest debt, saying TSA is intended to reduce the cost of borrowing but Nigeria is still borrowing.
He posited that there should be strong legislation to back up TSA policy with stringent punishment for those who fail to comply with it at all levels, saying “such laws should make it illegal to operate separate accounts for TSA implementation.
“There should be an ethical revolution. All MDAs involved in the use of TSA must be ethical in its implementation and management of accounts,” he added.
