In a move aimed at enhancing healthcare education infrastructure and supporting the federal government’s goal of producing 120,000 nurses annually, the Office of the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Sustainable Development Goals (OSSAP-SDGs) has donated a modern hostel block to the National Orthopaedic Hospital, Igbobi, Lagos.
In a statement issued by Special Adviser on Media to the OSSAP-SDGs, Desmond Utomwen, the newly built 36-bed hostel, equipped with en-suite bedrooms, kitchenettes, common rooms with flat-screen TVs and Set top box, and internet access, can accommodate over 120 female nursing students.
The facility that was officially commissioned by the Minister of State for Health and Social Welfare, Tunji Alausa was witnessed by prominent government .
During the ceremony, Alausa highlighted the hostel’s modern amenities and emphasized the importance of providing safe and nurturing environments for students.
He also announced further commitments by OSSAP-SDGs under President Bola Tinubu’s leadership, including the construction of a second hostel at Igbobi and a hostel for students at Federal Neuro-Psychiatric Hospital Yaba.
In her remarks, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Sustainable Development Goals, Adejoke Orelope-Adefulire, expressed her joy at the event and detailed the hostel’s features, stating that it has 26 rooms on one suspended floor, 2 kitchenettes, 1 store, 2 matron rooms, and 2 lounges, accommodating up to 144 students.
She listed the hostel’s benefits, to include alleviating accommodation issues, reducing commute time, enhancing academic performance, and fostering a sense of community among students.
Orelope-Adefulire reaffirmed OSSAP-SDGs’ commitment to the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals in Nigeria, prioritising interventions that impact the lives of the poor and vulnerable.
