Doctors that specialise in eye care, otherwise known as optometrists, have challenged security agencies to carry out deeper investigations to unravel the cause of the death of one of their own, Dr.Ogechi Ezeagu, who was allegedly strangulated by her husband following domestic violence on July 10, 2023.
Under the umbrella of the Nigerian Optometric Association (NOA), the doctors in a statement, yesterday, by its President, Dr. Anderson Chimeziri, demanded thorough investigation that would fish out the culprits while justice is served to all parties.
The association, expressed shock and sadness on the news of the murder of their colleague, and called on concerned authorities in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and Inspector General of Police, to as a matter of urgency bring the perpetrators of the crime to book so as to assuage the pain of the family.
“The Nigerian Optometric Association will not let this lie low as we shall put measures in place to safeguard all our members particularly the vulnerable ones among us who are mostly women. We are already collaborating with Women Optometrists in Nigeria (WON) to provide legal services that will protects our female members whether single or married from abuse of any kind. The welfare of our members is our utmost priority.”
He confirmed that NOA has set up a committee on Women Affairs to liaise with existing bodies and interphase with gender based activists to protect the interest of women-members from harassment and abuse.
“But on Dr. Ezeagu’s case, we are closely monitoring the matter and shall respond as the need arises. We sympathize with her family and the optometry community in Nigeria,” he said.
