Super Eagles striker Paul Onuachu has expressed disappointment over Nigeria’s failure to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, describing it as a painful outcome for a country blessed with world-class talent.

Speaking ahead of Nigeria’s upcoming international friendlies with the NFF media, the towering forward admitted that missing out on football’s biggest tournament remains a major disappointment for the players and fans alike.

“It is sad that we are not going to the World Cup because we have good players, great players and world-class players, but unfortunately we are not going to the World Cup. It’s football and that’s what happens,” Onuachu said.

Despite the setback, the former Genk striker said the atmosphere within the national team remains positive whenever the players reunite for international duty.

“It is always nice to come around the team, meet the boys again and prepare for the games. We have the quality to play against any team in the world and hopefully we are going to show it,” he added.

The forward also reflected on a successful campaign with Turkish club Trabzonspor, where he played a key role in helping the club enjoy a memorable season.

According to Onuachu, Trabzonspor exceeded expectations despite operating with fewer resources than many of their rivals.

“I think both the team and I had an amazing season. Compared to a lot of other teams and the budgets they have, we really put in a good shift. We worked hard and came close to competing with the top teams, even though they are much stronger,” he said.

The striker singled out the club’s cup triumph as the highlight of the campaign, noting that the success brought joy to both the players and supporters.

“Winning the cup was a great feeling for the players, the city and especially the fans. It made it an amazing season,” Onuachu stated. He also credited his success in Turkey to the confidence shown in him by the club and its understanding of his strengths as a player.

“I know what the team wants and what the city wants. When you are in a team that plays to your strengths and understands your quality, things usually work out. When I arrived, I knew I was going to score goals,” he said.
