The quiet Umueze village, Isuaniocha in Awka North Local Government of Anambra State, has been thrown into mourning following the gruesome murder of a 29-year old only son.
The man, Bonaventure Mkpume, was reportedly hacked to death while separating a couple that was fighting at the wee hours of the morning.
Mkpume, said to have been happily married for about four years, though without children, was invited by a distressed family friend.
The deceased’s wife, Mrs Chinenye Mkpume, who narrated her ordeal to newsmen, said they were already in bed when she got an invitation from a female friend to assist in settling marital scores.
The woman who suspected foul play, demanded justice, insisting that the perpetrators of the heinous crime should be brought to book.
She said: “We were at home when one of our family friends called me on phone that the husband was beating her.
“I had wanted to go alone but my husband insisted on going with me not knowing it would be his last day on earth.”
Mrs. Mkpume who was sobbing uncontrollably added that unknown to her, her distressed friend, had also invited some boys to come over for reasons best known to her.
She said: “While we were still making peace for the couple, some boys, numbering five, with familiar faces stormed the scene with an ax and machetes.
“They pounced on my husband who was standing in front of the gate. They cut off one of his arms and his neck with the ax and machetes.”
She further revealed that the woman that invited her quickly dashed inside the house with her husband and locked the gate, leaving two of them at the mercy of the assailants.
Her husband according to her ran into the bush with several matchete cuts, while her shout for help was not answered as nobody came to their rescue.
The husband, she said, later gave up the ghost in a hospital.
The deceased’s mother, Mrs Grace Mkpume, who could not hold back her tears, called for justice to be done to the soul of her only son.
The Police Public Relations Officer in the State, Mr Haruna Mohammed (SP), said the DPO in the area was yet to brief the headquarters on the incident.
