From Kenneth Udeh, Abuja
The nomination of Senator Jimoh Ibrahim as Ambassador by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has triggered a fresh political contest for the Ondo South Senatorial seat, with legislative consultant and long-time political organiser, Kayode Fakuyi, formally declaring his intention to run.
In a brief chat with the SUN, Fakuyi described himself as a “legislative consultant with interest in constitutional matters and public policy,” adding that his ideological leanings and early exposure to politics shaped his commitment to governance and development.
Born and raised in Ilutitun, Fakuyi attended Federal Government College, Ido Ani, earned a Bachelor’s degree in Geography from Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) and later obtained a Master’s degree in Legislative Studies from the National Institute of Legislative and Democratic Studies (NILDS).
Fakuyi traced his political journey to childhood, recalling how he joined pro-democracy activists within his community before the advent of the Fourth Republic. He actively participated in the 1996 Okitipupa local government election under the Democratic Party of Nigeria (DPN) and later joined the Alliance for Democracy (AD) in 1999.
He has since been part of the Action Congress (AC), Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN), and the All Progressives Congress (APC), contributing to party administration, media strategy, and grassroots organisation.
“Politics for me is conviction, not convenience. I have been in opposition for many years because I believe in democratic socialism and community development,” he said.
On Insecurity
Fakuyi expressed optimism in President Tinubu’s recent security interventions and called for a multilayer policing structure. He advocated amendments to the Nigeria Police Act, Section 214 of the Constitution, as well as the Firearms Act and Private Guard Companies Act to allow private security personnel to bear firearms.
“Criminals already carry AK-47 rifles. Why shouldn’t well-trained private guards be allowed to do the same?” he asked.
Assessment of the 10th National Assembly
While acknowledging the experience of the Senate President and Speaker, Fakuyi urged lawmakers to halt the proliferation of new agencies.
“Senator Adams Oshiomhole has been the lone voice resisting needless establishment bills. The Oronsaye Report is still struggling, yet new agencies are created every day.”
On Nigeria’s Debt Profile
He criticised the public perception that the National Assembly routinely approves loans without scrutiny and recommended that the executive defend borrowing proposals through public hearings.
“This will improve public trust. Civil society and stakeholders should participate before loans are approved,” he said.
Constitutional Review
Fakuyi warned that time was running out for the current constitutional review exercise.
“They should send bills that are ready to state assemblies. The governors must also be engaged because they wield enormous influence.”
Review of Senator Jimoh Ibrahim’s Performance
Other News
Fakuyi praised Senator Ibrahim’s contributions, including bursaries for students and the development of a private university in Igbotako.
However, he asserted that his own legislative background makes him the most prepared successor.
“I have worked in the Senate for a decade. Before Jimoh Ibrahim joined politics in 2003, I had already spent years in the field. I have the experience to start work from day one.”
Plans for Ondo South
Fakuyi outlined an ambitious agenda centred on strong systems and structures, including a ward-based feedback circuit across 66 wards.
He pledged to champion solutions to sea incursion affecting coastal communities like Ayetoro and Obe-Nla, push for presidential intervention in coastal protection projects, and establish vocational centres, empowerment programmes, and initiatives on agriculture and solid minerals.
“I am ready to lead an agricultural revolution in Ondo South. I will support mechanisation, processing and value addition,” he said.
Chances in the APC Primary
He noted strong local sentiment in favour of Okitipupa completing its turn in the Senate, arguing that political representation in Ondo South has recently favoured other LGAs.
Beyond zoning logic, he emphasised constitutional eligibility and personal capacity as his primary strengths.
Women Representation
Fakuyi endorsed the push for reserved seats for women, backing the First Lady’s efforts and proposing a multi-stakeholder pact to guarantee at least 144 female lawmakers by 2027.
“If political parties can present candidates in prison or hospital, they can present qualified women. It only requires political will,” he said.
On Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa
He commended the governor’s leadership style, labour-friendly governance and investment in critical infrastructure, including the deep seaport and refinery projects.
“I hope to get his full support. I was one of the few who defended him during his toughest political battles.”
Message to Ondo South
Fakuyi urged voters to support experience, character and readiness for service.
“I am prepared to serve. APC should conduct a credible primary. My candidacy will deliver an overwhelming victory for the party. I can’t wait to join leaders like Adams Oshiomhole and Michael Opeyemi Bamidele in the Senate,” he concluded.
