His Royal Majesty, Igwe Nnaemeka Alfred Achebe, the Obi of Onitsha (Agbogidi) CFR, marked his 85th birthday with a modest gathering that reflected his preference for restraint amid national realities. Known for his deep roots in Igbo tradition, consistent advocacy for peace in the South-East, and service to his people, the monarch chose a low-key observance rather than large public festivities.

The octogenarian ruler has long been respected within the traditional institution for promoting stability and dialogue in the region. Despite interest from members of his kingdom to organise elaborate celebrations, he opted for a quiet moment with his people. There was an earlier evening of celebration in his honour at the Michael Okpara Auditorium, Umuahia, Abia State but a surprise appreciation shindig was pulled against his wish at The Delborough Hotel in Lagos, Nigeria.
As Board Chairman of The Delborough Hotel, the management of the classy hospitality haven, on Saturday, June 20, arranged an evening to recognise his contributions to culture, peace advocacy, and community service at the upscale The Dani Restaurant. The venue was decorated with images of the monarch with guests savouring an evening of convivial, melodious music, and fine dining amidst conversations and networking.
The event drew a range of prominent figures from politics, business, and public life including Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu; former President Olusegun Obasanjo; former Governor of Anambra State Peter Obi; energy tycoon Ernest Azudialu; Senator Florence Ita-Giwa; Charles Oputa; Daddy Freeze; Nkiru Anumudu; Uju Ifejika; and Prof. Pat Utomi.
For a monarch who had requested simplicity, the gathering became a public expression of respect from peers across different sectors. It underscored his standing not only as a traditional ruler, but also as a figure widely regarded for his commitment to peace and to preserving cultural heritage.
