The event drew top executives from partner organizations and industry leaders, marking a significant milestone in Africa’s burgeoning esports scene.
The Omniverse Africa, a dynamic convergence platform and summit, brought together over 7,000 passionate gamers from across the continent to compete in seven different gaming titles. With a staggering N5 million prize pool, the competition was fierce as participants vied for glory and recognition.
Mr. Charles Emembolu, Co-convener of The Omniverse Africa, delivered a passionate address reaffirming the company’s commitment to championing excellence within the gaming sector. He emphasized the intellectual prowess required in esports, highlighting strategic acumen, lightning-fast reflexes, and unparalleled teamwork as virtues celebrated by the event.
Furthermore, Emembolu shed light on the growing esports industry in Nigeria, emphasizing that gaming is no longer just a hobby but a lucrative career path. He pointed out that beyond tournament prize money, gamers have the potential to earn through in-game tokens and coins, contributing to an industry with an annual revenue exceeding $400 million. Additionally, he highlighted the industry’s capacity to attract foreign investment, thus bolstering the nation’s economic growth.
The ceremony also addressed common concerns surrounding gaming’s impact on young people. Mr. Kunmi Adenipebi, CEO of Game Evolution Technologies, offered a compelling perspective, urging parents to view gaming as a gateway to education and intellectual stimulation. He emphasized that when balanced, gaming can be incredibly valuable, citing that 90% of professional gamers excel academically.
Adenipebi further highlighted the explosive growth of mobile gaming in Nigeria, with over a million new gamers joining the ranks since 2019. He underscored the promising future for esports fueled by private sector investment in tournaments, teams, and coaching initiatives, declaring that the industry presents vast career opportunities for the next generation.
Moreover, Adenipebi introduced the concept of gamification in education, emphasizing the introduction of engaging educational games to spark interest in subjects like mathematics, English, and geography. This innovative approach allows young gamers to learn while they play, striking a perfect balance between entertainment and education.
