The President, Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN), Dr Innocent Okwuosa, has charged new inductees to stay updated with the latest accounting trend as it could boost their profession in the country.

Okwuosa gave this advice during the 59th induction ceremony for the Association of Accounting technicians West Africa (AATWA) which held in Lagos recently. Whilst noting that this was a significant milestone for the Institute, he expressed happiness with the young professionals who have made dedicated efforts into passing every stage of the ATS examinations and are now stepping into the esteemed accounting profession.

He explained that the ABWA regional accounting technician examination – the Accounting Technicians Scheme, West Africa – provides a standardised and recognised professional qualification for accounting technicians across the West Africa Region  adding that accounting technicians who qualify through this examination are assured of basic proficiency level.

“At the end of today’s induction, these young and bright accounting professionals would join the 30,424 Accounting Technicians of the Institute and become members of the West African-wide Association of Accounting Technicians (AAT), under the umbrella of the Association of Accountancy Bodies in West Africa (ABWA). Being inducted today bestows the inductees the rare privilege of practicing across every country in the West African region under the umbrella of ABWA.

As you all embark on this professional journey today, I urge you all to embrace every challenge as an opportunity for growth. The path ahead may present some hurdles, but with perseverance, dedication, and a thirst for knowledge, you will not just overcome these obstacles but emerge stronger and more capable. Now that you have this esteemed ATS qualification, you will be granted exemptions from some courses once you enroll for the professional examination. Therefore, endeavour to maximise this opportunity and become Chartered Accountants in the next couple of months”, Okwuosa said.

He further added that the accounting profession was a dynamic and rapidly changing one and urged them to embrace continuous learning and stay updated with the latest trends and practices in accounting.

“Remember, knowledge is your most powerful tool, and it will pave the way for your success. Moreover, I encourage you to actively engage with the Institute, take advantage of the resources available, and contribute to the growth and development of our noble profession.  I want you all to remember that accuracy and integrity is the cornerstone of our profession.”

You are therefore expected to uphold the ethics and values that ICAN stands for”, the ICAN President said.

Also speaking, the Acting Registrar, ICAN, Mukaila Lawal, implored the inductees to take their induction as a new challenge to set higher goals for themselves to become professional members of ICAN.
