The Executive Chairman of United Nigeria Airlines, Prof. Obiora Okonkwo, has received the Trailblazer Award in Aviation at the Daily Times Nigeria Centenary Awards, held to celebrate the newspaper’s 100 years of existence.

The award recognises Okonkwo’s contribution to Nigeria’s aviation industry through the establishment and growth of United Nigeria Airlines, an indigenous carrier that has expanded domestic air travel and improved connections between cities.

Since its establishment, the airline has provided passengers with more travel options, supported business and tourism activities and created jobs across the aviation value chain.

Receiving the award, Okonkwo called on the Federal Government to give greater support to private businesses, stressing that the sector plays a major role in creating jobs and driving economic growth.

He argued that the private sector is the country’s largest employer of labour after the government and should therefore receive more attention and support to thrive.

Building and running an airline requires huge financial investment, strict compliance with safety regulations and efficient operations. Okonkwo’s investment in United Nigeria Airlines highlights the contribution of private businesses to the development of the country’s aviation industry.

The award comes as the airline records progress in its efforts to strengthen its finances and expand operations.

United Nigeria Airlines recently raised ₦22 billion in the first tranche of its ₦100 billion commercial paper programme, following strong investor demand.

The offer, which targeted ₦20 billion, was oversubscribed, prompting the airline to accept an additional 10 per cent of the excess subscription while refunding investors whose applications could not be fully accommodated.

The strong demand was attributed to investor confidence in the airline’s financial position, growth plans and ability to meet its obligations.

United Nigeria Airlines currently operates flights to 14 destinations across Nigeria and Ghana and is working to expand its regional operations. It also has approvals to operate as a flag carrier to six international destinations.

The airline is certified by the International Air Transport Association (IATA) Operational Safety Audit (IOSA), became an IATA member in 2022 and belongs to the African Airlines Association.

In 2026, it signed the IATA Multilateral Interline Traffic Agreement and secured global distribution system agreements with Amadeus and Sabre. These arrangements allow travel agents around the world to access its flight schedules and ticket inventory.

The airline said the partnerships would improve its international reach and make it easier for passengers to book its flights through travel agencies worldwide.
