The Ohanaeze Ndigbo Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Chapter has disclosed plans to host its maiden economic and housing summit as part of broader efforts to promote wealth creation, home ownership and economic empowerment among Ndigbo living in Abuja and beyond.
Speaking during a press conference ahead of a line up of activities, President Ohanaeze Ndigbo FCT, Hon. Chief Andrew Ugwu, disclosed this during a media briefing in Abuja while unveiling the organisation’s programmes for the remaining part of 2026.
Ugwu said the summit, scheduled for first week of December 2026 at the Transcorp Hilton, Abuja, would bring together policymakers, financial institutions, real estate developers, investors and key stakeholders to explore solutions to economic and housing challenges facing members of the community.
According to him, discussions at the summit will focus on investment opportunities, wealth sustainability, mortgage accessibility, diaspora housing schemes and sustainable urban development.
He said the initiative is aimed at creating pathways to economic prosperity and home ownership for Ndigbo resident in the Federal Capital Territory.
“Our goal is to ensure that no Igbo man or woman in the FCT is without a pathway to home ownership or economic dignity.
The Ohanaeze president also announced that the organisation would unveil the Ohanaeze Cooperative Society during the 2026 Igbo Day celebration slated for September 29.
He explained that the cooperative society would serve as an economic platform to mobilise resources, provide accessible credit facilities and support investments in agriculture, trade, real estate and micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs).
“The cooperative embodies our resolve to move from cultural celebration to tangible economic empowerment for every Igbo son and daughter in the FCT,” he stated.
“The annual Igbo Day celebration would showcase the rich cultural heritage of the Igbo people through traditional music, dance, cuisine, arts, exhibitions and discussions centred on unity and community development.
To ensure the successful execution of the programmes, he inaugurated a projects committee chaired by Hon.Mrs. Ginika Tor, with Chief Favour Odeta serving as secretary.
Ugwy called on “all sons and daughters of Ndigbo resident in the FCT, Southeast Nigeria, and the diaspora, as well as friends and well-wishers” to participate while corporate partners, government agencies, and the media were also invited to support and amplify the initiatives.
He described the planned programmes as strategic interventions designed to preserve cultural identity while promoting economic growth, entrepreneurship and sustainable development among members of the community.
Speaking for the team, Hon. Mrs. Ginika Tor thanked the leadership for the confidence reposed in them and expressed opitimism that the 2026 Igbo Day would be a resounding success.
She added that while the South-East indigenes would be prioritised, the initiatives may later be extended to other residents of the nation’s capital.
“We’re prioritising South-East indigenes, but the benefits will extend to other FCT residents,” Ugwu stated. Chief Favour Odeta will serve as Project Secretary.
Another member of the committee, Mrs Becky Okoroafor also pledged her commitment to the group, stating that she is ready to make sacrifices for the Igbo community in Abuja .
She said the Ndigbo is not just phenomenal but demonstrates a shared commitment to advancing the lives of Ndigbo in the FCT.
