Feyisayo Michael Ogunyemi, a Nigerian-born accounting and sustainability scholar based in the United States, has received the Best Paper Award from the International Journal of Multidisciplinary Research in Science, Engineering and Technology (IJMRSET) for research examining the role of artificial intelligence in carbon accounting.

The award was granted for his peer-reviewed paper, “AI-Powered Carbon Accounting: Transforming ESG Reporting Standards for a Sustainable Global Economy,” published in the journal’s December 2023 edition. IJMRSET said the paper emerged as the top submission from more than 500 manuscripts reviewed internationally, following an independent editorial assessment process.

According to the journal’s Editor-in-Chief, Dr Sankar, the study distinguished itself through methodological depth and practical relevance. The research integrates artificial intelligence, machine learning, natural language processing and blockchain technologies into carbon accounting frameworks, offering an alternative to traditional emissions reporting systems that are often criticised for opacity and inconsistency.

The paper addresses a core challenge confronting regulators, investors and corporations: the credibility of carbon emissions data used in ESG reporting. By applying automated analytics and data verification tools, Ogunyemi’s framework seeks to improve emissions measurement, enhance regulatory compliance and strengthen corporate accountability in sustainability disclosures.

IJMRSET’s editorial board noted the interdisciplinary value of the research, highlighting its relevance to accounting, environmental science, corporate governance and digital innovation. The journal described the study as a meaningful contribution to global efforts to improve sustainability reporting as part of broader climate mitigation strategies.

Ogunyemi is affiliated with Eastern Illinois University and holds professional accounting qualifications, including chartered status. The award places him among a small group of researchers recognised for work that bridges academic research and professional practice, reinforcing the growing international visibility of Nigerian scholarship in sustainability and advanced accounting research.
