Nigeria’s rising junior tennis star Seun Ogunsakin has written a new chapter in his career by securing his first-ever win in the main draw of a Junior Grand Slam tournament, BSNSports.com.ng reports.
The Aurum Tennis Academy player defeated 15th seed Kuan-Shou Chen of Chinese Taipei in a gripping three-set battle, 5-7, 6-3, 7-5, on the opening day of the 2026 US Open Junior Championships.
Ogunsakin, who entered the 64-player main draw as a qualifier, showed remarkable resilience after dropping the opening set.
He fought back to take the second and then edged a tense decider to seal the milestone victory.
This triumph marks the first time the Nigerian teenager has won a match in the main draw of a junior Grand Slam event. It continues an impressive run that has seen him compete in three consecutive junior majors this year, following appearances at the French Open and Wimbledon, where he reached the boys’ singles main draw and the doubles semifinals.
Ogunsakin had earned his place in the US Open main draw by navigating the qualifying rounds without dropping a set, including a notable upset of top seed Felix Roussel of Canada.
The hard-court success in New York further cements Ogunsakin’s status as one of Africa’s most promising young talents and a key figure for Nigerian tennis on the international stage. He will look to build on this breakthrough in the next round.
