Ojodu City’s third appearance at the 76th edition of the Viareggio Cup which kicks off March 9th to 23rd at the Gran Teatro Puccini in Torre del Lago in Italy, is more than participation—it’s a statement, says Paul Ogunlaja.
Ogunlaja, Sporting Director of Ojodu City provided more insights on the club’s ambitions this season.
“The club has a clear understanding of the tournament’s environment, pace, and European structure. The goal is to compete with integrity, show tactical maturity, and earn respect in every game. Ojodu City isn’t there to surprise anyone but to compete properly and represent with pride.
“The team is well-prepared mentally and tactically. Preparation involves more than fitness; it requires discipline, structure, emotional control, and understanding of tournament dynamics. Ojodu City emphasises compact organisation, efficient transitions, and resilience. At this level, small details determine matches, and that’s the focus of their training.”

Paired in Group B- 6 alongside Europe’s Red Star Belgrade (Serbia), Rijeka (Croatia) and West African rival Olympique Thiessois (Senegal), Ogunlaja says tough groups build strong teams.
“Being grouped with top European U19 teams like Red Star Belgrade and Rijeka poses a tough challenge. These academies are known for their tactical discipline, physicality, and structured development programs. But tough groups build strong teams. Ojodu City respects every opponent but approaches the tournament without fear. Competing against top teams fosters growth.
“Confronting a Senegalese club adds another layer of competition. Senegalese teams are technically skilled, physically robust, and tactically organised. The match will be intense and emotional, but Ojodu City understands African football culture and is prepared for the challenge. No game in Italy will be easy, and the team accepts this reality.”

The Viareggio Cup is a reputable European competition attracting scouts and stakeholders. Success depends on discipline, tactical training, professionalism, and consistency. If Nigerian teams show structure and maturity, this tournament can open meaningful global opportunities.
