Blending Technological Expertise and a Vision for a Greener Future and known for her tech-driven acumen and managerial prowess, Ms. Anita Odiete, a sustainability advocate and the dynamic force behind the emerging ‘Atunlo’ initiative, announces a comprehensive strategy to combat waste challenges and promote sustainability in Africa, starting from Ibadan, Oyo State.
Ibadan, celebrated for its rich heritage, is also one of Africa’s most expansive cities.
Ms. Odiete noted that rapid urbanization and growth have led to escalating waste management concerns.
Addressing these pressing issues, Ms. Odiete ‘s forward-thinking approach encompasses the introduction of an
integrated circular economy model and sustainable practices designed to empower local communities, enhance responsible consumption, and rejuvenate the city’s environment.
Key Features of Ms. Odiete’s initiative includes:
Advocacy: By raising awareness on waste management principles and practices among
businesses, policymakers, and the general public, Atunlo is able to combat climate change,
promote responsible consumption and protect aquatic life from marine pollution
Community Upliftment: Through ‘Atunlo’s’ “Trade Waste for Cash” program, residents can
monetize their waste, stimulate local economies, and foster a sense of ownership over environmental outcomes.
Educational Outreach: Waste recycling clubs and dedicated sustainability training sessions
will equip the next generation with the knowledge and resources to continue the green revolution.
Technological Integration: Harnessing her tech background, Anita introduces an innovative
system that not only predicts waste generation patterns and management but also tokenizes wastes where individuals and corporates can schedule pickups and dropoffs of
their wastes
Within three months of operation, Atunlo has impressively collected over 15 million PET bottles,
redirecting them into the recycling value chain. Additionally, 30 tons of PP plastics have been gathered, earmarked for conversion into valuable domestic materials.
Commenting on her vision, Ms. Odiete said, “Ibadan holds a special place in my heart. It’s not just about
cleaning up; it’s about redefining our relationship with waste, understanding its value, and fostering
a community that thrives economically and environmentally.”
As Ms. Odiete embarks on this ambitious journey, the world watches with anticipation, hopeful for the
transformative changes this initiative promises to bring to Ibadan and, ultimately, to other geo-political zones.
