Former Governor of Anambra State and Presidential candidate of the Labour Party in the 2023 elections, Mr. Peter Obi, has laid the foundation of the boys’ hostel of the Dominican Sisters College, Abatete, Anambra State.
Obi, who donated a whopping amount of N100 million, is building the second boys’ hostel for the college, and the third in all he has built for the college.
A press release from Obi’s Media team indicated that during the 2024/25 graduation ceremony of the college, which was preceded by a Mass celebration inside the College, Obi has released N25 million as the first tranche and promised that gradually but surely, the building will be completed in no distant time.
He used the occasion to thank the reverend sisters for what they have been able to do and pledged to assist them in building a school of their dreams.
He said he is virtually a member of the Dominican Sisters’ community, having worshipped in their church for no less than 10 times, starting from when he was governor of Anambra State.
Obi advised the graduating students to embrace education because that is what made him what he is today.
He hinted that the burden of building the hostel may not be borne by him alone, and that a certain man whose maternal home is in the town is giving a helping hand, and that the man’s name will be revealed one day.

Obi said that everything he does is for the good of society because if society is good, everyone will benefit, and if it is bad, it will also affect everybody.
In an interview, the first principal of the college, Rev. Sister Pia Mary Folashade Adesanya praised Obi for being a pillar of support and inspiration to the school.
She recalled several building projects Obi had attracted to the school, the first being the block built by a bank in place of a house for Obi during Obi’s 50th birthday.
Obi himself had recalled how the bank where he was director before becoming governor had wanted to build a house for him in his village to mark his birthday, but he turned it down, preferring that the bank build houses in three schools, including Dominican Sisters College, Abatete.
Rev. Sister Adesanya also told of Obi’s assistance in paying salaries for the school when things were tough and his encouragement to make the school a boarding school which has paid off.
Apart from these, she continued, Obi gave the school two school buses, scholarships, and computers.
Rev. Sister Adesanya, who is now Superior General of Holy Family Sisters of the Needy, which is a Vatican appointment, said:”
Seeing Obi today, words failed me in how to describe my feelings because this ground I am standing on can be named Peter Obi’s soil because he saw this school from Genesis to Revelation. It was a day school. When things were so difficult, as it was a Day School, it was Obi who suggested that we make it a boarding school. Then we couldn’t pay salaries and he helped us to pay salaries for three months. As soon as Obi stepped into the school, we witnessed a huge turnaround”, she concluded.
