Chairman, Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE), Benin Branch, Edo State, Friday Obanor, has called on engineers to embrace unity, love, mutual respect and collective responsibility to advance the engineering profession and contribute meaningfully to national development.
He made the call while delivering his inaugural address as the 24th chairman of the society, stressing that the progress of the engineering profession depended largely on members’ willingness to put aside personal interests and work together towards common goals.
He identified unity and harmony among members as key priorities of his administration, expressing concern over unhealthy rivalry and the lack of support among professionals.
According to him, engineers must move beyond personal gains and cultivate a culture of mutual support, cooperation and shared progress if the profession is to attain greater heights.
Drawing an analogy from the popular crab syndrome, Obanor cautioned against the tendency among colleagues to pull down those striving to succeed, rather than encouraging and supporting their advancement: “Let our individual gains be secondary, while the gains of the profession remain our utmost priority.”
He also reminded members that nobody attains professional success in isolation, noting that those who have risen through the ranks should remember the contributions of others and extend similar support to younger professionals.
While acknowledging the contributions and achievements of past administrations, Obanor pledged to build on their legacies, address existing challenges and introduce initiatives that would strengthen the Society.
He called on engineers, contractors and other stakeholders to support his administration, particularly in its efforts to promote innovation, technological advancement and infrastructure development.
Obanor expressed confidence that with unity, love and collective commitment, his administration would deliver meaningful achievements and leave a lasting legacy for the Society.
He urged members to renew their commitment to the ideals of the engineering profession and work together for the growth of the NSE and the development of Nigeria.
