The Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospitals Complex (OAUTHC) in Ile-Ife, Osun State, has announced the receipt of a N2.1 billion appropriation from the Federal Government to revive its renal replacement programme.
The Chief Medical Director (CMD) of the hospital, Professor John Okeniyi, disclosed this during the institution’s 50th-anniversary celebration and the official relaunch of the renal programme in Ile-Ife, on Thursday.
He noted that the funding is a key component of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
Expressing optimism, Professor Okeniyi stated that the release and implementation of the approved funds would fully restore the hospital’s renal replacement services and significantly boost its capacity to deliver quality kidney care to patients.
“I would also like to thank the President because we have up to N2.1 billion appropriated for our renal programme.
“By the time we access and deploy this funding, I believe the renal replacement programme will be fully back. That is part of the Renewed Hope Agenda,” Professor Okeniyi said.”
Also speaking at the event, a former Deputy Governor of Osun State, Senator Iyiola Omisore, called for expanded support for healthcare initiatives, underscoring the critical importance of investing in measures that improve public health and save lives.
“What I am trying to emphasize is that health is essential to life. That is why I consider this initiative important.
“I try to support causes that people will appreciate and that will make a meaningful difference in their lives. That is the reality of healthcare institutions and the importance of their services,” Omisore said.
In his remarks, Seyi Tinubu, who was represented by Lawal Umar, Chairman of Grassroots Mobilization for Tinubu/Shettima, urged that healthcare success should be measured by practical impact rather than infrastructure alone.
He emphasized that “health achievement should not be judged by policies and buildings, but by whether ordinary Nigerians can access care, afford medicines, and recover.”
As part of the milestone 50th-anniversary celebration, OAUTHC honored several distinguished personalities with awards, including Chief Agboola Odeyemi, Senator Iyiola Omisore, Mr. Matthew Gbonjubola, Asiwaju Yinka Fasuyi, Alhaji Lateef Bakare, Mr. Olakanmi Sarumi, and Pastor and Pastor (Mrs.) E. A. Adeboye.
