…Demands FG action over remarks labelling Christians infidels

Former Chief of Staff to the former Imo State Governor, Ugwumba Uche Nwosu, has condemned remarks attributed to Plateau-based Islamic scholar, Sheikh Sani Yahaya Jingir, describing Christians as infidels.
Nwosu, in a statement issued in Abuja, described the remarks as divisive and unacceptable, warning that they could trigger unnecessary religious tension and undermine national unity.
He said Nigeria’s strength lies in its religious, ethnic and regional diversity, stressing that Nigerians must continue to protect peaceful coexistence among the different groups.
Nwosu said it was unfortunate that a religious leader would make statements capable of setting one faith against another at a time the country needs greater unity, peace and stability.
He urged Nigerians to condemn the remarks, insisting that no individual should use religion to denigrate or label an entire faith community.
According to him, such utterances could deepen religious mistrust, widen existing divisions and threaten peaceful coexistence.
The former Chief of Staff also appealed to religious leaders to use their influence to promote tolerance, mutual respect, reconciliation and understanding rather than division.
He called on the Federal Government to take appropriate action, in accordance with the law, against individuals whose public utterances threaten national unity and peaceful coexistence.
Nwosu stressed that freedom of religion and expression should not be used to promote hatred or incite division among Nigerians.
He appealed to Christians and Muslims across the country not to allow provocative statements by individuals to destroy the longstanding relationship between the two faith communities.
“Nigeria needs responsible voices that will unite the country rather than deepen existing divisions,” Nwosu said, urging citizens to work together for peace, stability and national development.
