The Lagos wing of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) on Wednesday threw its weight behind the reelection bid of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, with a pledge to mobilise members to ensure his success at the poll in 2023.
State Chairman Akintoye Hassan made the declaration at the 2022 World Teachers’ Day Celebration with the theme: “The Transfiguration of Education Begins with Teachers”.
Governor Sanwo-Olu, who was the special guest, said his administration has been proactive on issues affecting education and teachers.
The NUT chairman acknowledged that the governor has addressed the demands of members and done well in the quality delivery of education in the state.
His words: “Today, it is about showing appreciation and payback time for the governor come 2023. We will mobilise our members, family and relations for you in 2023.
“Mr Governor, your second term is assured and guaranteed. Teachers in the state are behind you in 2023.”
Hassan disclosed that in some states, many governors would be afraid to attend teachers’ celebrations because teachers are not happy with them over welfare issues, adding, “Sanwo-Olu is here and it means we are happy with his administration. We will show appreciation to him come 2023 election.”
Representative of NUT National President, Mr Titi Adebanjo, said Governor Sanwo-Olu has implemented most of the demands contained in the president’s speech listing outstanding demands.
He reiterated that in some states, governors or their representatives would be afraid to attend teachers’ celebrations to address NUT members’ dues to non-performance.
Adebanjo acknowledged that Sanwo-Olu has done well and deserves a second term, stating, “let me join others to say 4+4 is 8 (years). Our members in the state are solidly behind you in 2023.”
Addressing the teachers, Sanwo-Olu, acknowledged the contribution of NUT members to the quality delivery of education and described teachers as important stakeholders responsible for moulding future leaders
“My administration believes that teachers’ reward should be here on earth. In Lagos, you are already reaping your reward,” he added.
According to him, through the Eko Excel programme, his administration has trained over 16,000 teachers in the new modern method of teaching.
Sanwo-Olu tasked teachers to uphold the ethics of the profession and ensure quality delivery of education in the state.
