About 50,000 athletes from over 50 varsities across Nigeria  will compete in the 28th edition of the Nigerian University Games Association, NUGA, scheduled for November 14 to 28, 2026 at the University of Calabar.

According to the Vice Chancellor of UNICAL, Prof Offiong Efanga Offiong, the participating institutions are expected to increase before the commencement of the competition and the institution is set to deliver an unforgettable experience.

To help students prepare and compete effectively, all lecturers have been directed not to fix lectures beyond 2pm on Wednesdays  to give student-athletes enough time to train and get ready for the competition.

“I am thrilled to unveil a significant milestone in our journey as we announce the tentative hosting dates for the 28th Edition of the Nigeria Universities Games Association Games, scheduled to take place from the 14th to the 24th of November, 2026.

“This event is more than just a series of competitions; it is an extraordinary opportunity to showcase our commitment to academic and athletic excellence, foster unity among our Universities, and celebrate the vibrant spirit of our youth.

“The athletes are expected to compete in 28 games during the competition and arrangement has been made with security agencies to ensure a hitch free competition” , the Vice Chancellor said.

He added that relics from the last NUGA games the institution hosted in 1990 barely exists and the institution is constructing a befitting sports complex which will outlast the competition.

Prof. Offiong also disclosed that the staff games will also be re-introduced to make the institution not just a hub in academics but in sport.
