The Executive Secretary, National Universities Commission (NUC), Prof Abubakar Rasheed, has resigned effective June 30, three years and one month to the end of his second term in office.

It was gathered that Prof. Rasheed submitted his resignation letter six weeks ago but kept the news secret until late last week when he made his intention known to his staff.

The Sun gathered that his resignation was not connected to corruption allegations nor ill health, but his desire to return to the classroom to continue his academic work.

Some of the staff was sighted taking pictures with Prof. Rasheed, on Monday, which may possibly be his last working day in the office due to the Sallah break that may lead to the end of the month.

Prof. Rasheed also performed another official function on Monday when he presented a provisional operational license to a newly registered university, Kogi State University, Kabba, Kogi State.

Prof Rasheed was appointed by former President, Muhammadu Buhari, alongside other heads of parastatals in the Federal Ministry of Education, in August 2016, for five years term. He was reappointed in 2021, to continue in office.
