Stories from Paul Osuyi, Asaba

One of the athletes for host Delta State at the ongoing National Sports Festival (NSF) has been stripped of his two gold medals.

The athlete was discovered to have registered first for Anambra State before switching allegiance to Delta in expectation of a mouth-watering reward.

But he has been denied the benefit as the eagle eyes of the authorities responsible for screening the medals won found him out.

Chairman of the media and publicity sub-committee of the Local Organising Committee (LOC), Charles Aniagwu made this known on Wednesday.

Despite that, Aniagwu said Delta was still maintaining a decent lead on the medals table with a total of 275 gold medals out of which 140 are gold.

He said Bayelsa was a distant second on the table with 40 gold medals, followed by Edo with 28 gold medals.

“If it is possible to take first, second and third, we would have done that. But we appreciate our brothers from Edo and Bayelsa.

“What that implies is that when you talk about sports in Nigeria, South-South is first. We are not only rich in crude oil, we are also good at sports,” he said.
