In a desperate move to combat vandalism of Critical National Assets and Infrastructure (CNAI) during the Yuletide, in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), FCT Command, arrested three suspected vandals around the National Hospital, Constitution Avenue, Abuja.

In a statement, the suspects were apprehended while arranging the vandalised items to cart them away to an unknown destination.

The arrest was made by the Tactical Squad of the CNAI department of the command on routine patrol during the Yuletide to ensure safety of residents, security of lives and protection of infrastructure in the FCT.

The suspects are; Abdulsalam Aminu, male, 25 years old from Ingawa Local Government Area (LGA), Katsina State;, Mustapha Sale, male, 26 years old from Ingawa LGA of Katsina State and Suleiman Sani, male, 19 years old also from Ingawa LGA, Katsina State.

Exhibits recovered from them included road crash barriers of different sizes and one sledgehammer. Investigation of the three suspects is still ongoing and the outcome will determine their culpability and the appropriate legal action that will follow.

Commenting on the arrest, the FCT Commandant, Dr Olusola Odumosu, said, the command was determined to bring to an end the rascality of vandals in the FCT.

“We are aware that these criminals always take advantage of festive seasons to perpetrate their heinous acts. That’s the reason we mounted guard waiting for them in order to beat them to their game.

“It is disheartening that government’s effort to provide essential infrastructure to make life meaningful is being jettisoned by some unscrupulous elements busy vandalising these assets for their own selfish gains, and this must be stopped.

“It is our responsibility to protect critical infrastructure and amenities such as crash barriers, roads, bridges, manhole covers, telecommunication and power installations, among others, and we will not relent in our efforts to protect these national assets from these criminals”, Odumosu stated.

The FCT boss, maintained that the command is poised to provide protection for all CNAI under their purview, come rain, come shine.

He warned criminals in the territory to desist from sabotaging the efforts of government or be ready to face the full weight of the law adding that, disobedience to the law especially theft and vandalism of CNAI will not be treated with levity.

The commandant, accordingly, urged FCT residents to assist the corps with vital intelligence and information to help them deliver on their mandate and rid the FCT of criminals and vandals.
