The Northern Youth Assembly (Majalisar Matasan Arewa) has expressed strong reservations over attempts by the Deputy Senate President, Barau Jibrin, to facilitate the passage of the contentious tax reform bills.
The Assembly, an umbrella body of youth from the 19 Northern states, accused Senator Jibrin of systematically working to ensure the bills scale through their second reading.
In a letter signed by Ali Mohammed Idris and Abdullahi Garba, President and Secretary of the Assembly, respectively, they described the reform bills as “evil” and argued that they would gravely undermine the economic and commercial prosperity of the North.
In their letter to the distinguished senator, dated 29th November, they contended that the tax bills put forth by the Tinubu administration represented the highest display of insensitivity to the economic and commercial struggles of the people of Kano North, Kano State, and the entire Northern Nigeria.

The Assembly lamented that the North is currently besieged by critical issues such as electricity shortages, insecurity, poverty, poor infrastructure, and unemployment. They expressed regret that the Deputy Senate President has chosen to embark on a venture that would aggravate these challenges.
They insisted that the Deputy Senate President was serving the interests of his political godfathers at the expense of his constituency and the region.
The Assembly further alleged that Senator Jibrin was determined to push the bills forward due to a political promise made to him by his godfathers. However, they pledged to resist this effort and vowed to thwart his political interests come 2027.
“Northern Nigeria requires only leaders who can speak in the interest of the region,” they declared, while assuring that they would do everything within their power to defeat the bills.
