Nollywood plays significant role in Nigeria’s economy – Peace Egwu

Talented Nollywood filmmaker, producer and actress Peace Egwu has said the Nigeria movie industry’s contributions to the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of the nation has continued to grow over the years.

According to Egwu, with the kind of production and sophisticated cameras being used today and the partnership across the world, Nollywood practitioners have become hotcake in the make-believe industry.

In her words, “The industry has evolved with improved production quality, better technology, and more professional talent as against what was before where attention was not paid to quality or technology but just on talent and story. I can tell you that Nollywood significantly contributes to the country’s economy in several ways. It provides direct and indirect jobs for thousands of people, including actors, directors, producers, screenwriters, editors, and other crew members. It is a substantial part of Nigeria’s creative industry, which contributes about 1.42 per cent to the national GDP.”

She added: “Nollywood films are popular across Africa and in the diaspora, generating foreign exchange earnings through international sales, distribution, and streaming rights. The global popularity of Nollywood films promotes Nigerian culture and attracts tourists, who visit the country to experience locations featured in films. The industry stimulates growth in related sectors such as marketing, advertising, hospitality, and transportation. It also generates significant tax revenue for the government through film production, distribution, and other business activities.”

Peace also stated that Nollywood films are widely available on streaming platforms, expanding their global reach.

It could be recalled that Peace Egwu has produced and acted in several movies and still counting.

She graduated from the University of Calabar, Nigeria in 2015 with a Bachelor of Arts in Modern Languages and Translation Studies.

Her passion to impact positively in her society and the quest to combat critical health issues and assist in developing good and functional policies, propelled her journey to the United Kingdom in pursuit of a Masters of Science Degree in Public Health from Glasgow Caledonian University, London Campus. A feat she recently completed in May, 2024.
