Nobody hijacked running of ASUU-OOU branch from us –Union leaders

The Academic Staff Union of Universities, Olabisi Onabanjo University (OOU) Ago-Iwoye branch has debunked the insinuations making rounds that the university management is the ones in charge of running the affairs of the branch.

ASUU-OOU leaders told Daily Sun that at no time did they abdicate their responsibilities to anyone.

The union faulted the insinuations that OOU Vice Chancellor, Prof. Ayodeji Agboola in the absence of the branch chairman, is now the one calling the shot and detecting the tune.

The union leaders also denied the insinuations that ASUU-OOU has abandoned some members facing various disciplinary actions/panel.

The acting chairman of ASUU-OOU, Dr. Oloto Wasiu told Daily Sun that the affairs of the union is under full control of the executives and no one is controlling the union from outside the Secretariat.

He stated: “Since the absence of our chairman, who traveled for medical treatment, the executives have been running the affairs of this branch. The entire executives in the secretariat take decisions.

“The insinuations that the VC is the one running the affairs of the union are not true. The executives have not abdicated their responsibilities to any one. The union is intact and doing well. Those claiming that the VC is the one taking decisions for the union don’t know how the union operates.

“Mind you, the VC is our member and was even a former chairman of this branch. He has the right to attend Congress or any ASUU-OOU functions. Note that the executives implement the decisions of congress. Even in the absence of our chairman, the executives are intact and are in charge of the secretariat.”

In his reaction, the Immediate Past Chairman (IPC) of ASUU-OOU, Dr. Okewale described the insinuations that the branch has been hijacked by the VC as unfounded and sponsored to create division among members.

Dr. Okewale disclosed that the executives of ASUU-OOU have not ceded the running of the union to any individual or group of people.

“The VC as a member of this branch is entitled to attend congress. Moreover, he was our former chairman. If he offers advice or suggestions at congress does not mean he has taken over the running of the ASUU-OOU branch.

“In fact at no time did this current ASUU-OOU executives cede the running of the union to the VC, any person or groups of persons. It is very unfair for selfish reasons for some people to go to town to claim. We have organised some programmes funded by the union. The entire executives of ASUU-OOU are intact and are holding forth in the absence of our chairman,” the stated.

Okewale said the insinuations are an attempt to pitch members against the executives and create confusion when non exists, adding that nobody hijacked the branch at any time in the absence of the chairman.

Reacting to the insinuations, OOU Vice Chancellor, Prof. Ayodeji Agboola, denied meddling in the affairs of the union nor dictated to the executives how to run the Secretariat.

“Don’t forget I am a member of ASUU and a former chairman. Is it a crime to attend the ASUU-OOU Congress? At no time did I dictate to the executives what to do. I did not take over the secretariat. Our elected officials are in charge of running the affairs of the union.”

Agboola insisted that it is not possible for an individual to take over any branch of the union or dictate how the secretariat is run. He said those sponsoring the lies know better how the union operates.
