Ahead of the off-cycle and 2027 general elections, the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Olatunji Disu, on Wednesday assured that no political party or candidate would receive preferential treatment from the Nigeria Police Force (NPF).

The IGP gave the assurance when he received the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Joash Ojo Amupitan (SAN), in his office at the Force Headquarters in Abuja, saying that everyone would be treated equally.

While assuring that the police would maintain electoral guidelines and ensure peaceful elections, he said, “The Nigeria Police Force is the lead agency for internal security, and we are ever ready for peaceful elections. We will strive to ensure peaceful and violence-free elections.

“I can assure you that no political party or candidate will receive preferential treatment from the police during the course of these elections. We will treat everyone equally and ensure a smooth election.”

The IGP, who also assured the INEC team of police protection, called for collaboration with all relevant stakeholders to achieve free, fair and peaceful elections.

Earlier in his address, the INEC chairman said they were at the Force Headquarters to seek collaboration with the police for peaceful elections and that they had visited the IGP to ensure that proper preparations in terms of security were put in place before the election.

While noting that INEC had identified violence and insecurity as some of the major threats to the forthcoming elections, the INEC chairman said, “Without proper arrangements and a secure environment, the electorate and the contestants will not even have opportunities for free and peaceful elections.”
