A professor of Internal Medicine in the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital, Prof  Ofem Enang says there is no basis for the  purported disqualification  of his candidacy from the 2026 presidential race of the Nigeria Medical Association (NMA).

He disclosed this in a letter addressed to the president of the NMA, Prof Bala Audu,  and dated 17th March, 2026.

Prof. Enang insisted that the action  represents a clear departure from a number of  provisions of the NMA constitution particularly Article 4 and  11 (1) (b).

He insisted in his protest letter that he fully complied with all constitutional requirements governing nomination and submission of forms within stipulated timelines.

Prof. Enang enumerated five  key pillars of his protest letter which includes absence of constitutional basis for his disqualification, breach of fair hearing, improper reliance on non- constitutional criteria and demanded for immediate redress.

According to him, “Nowhere in Article 11 is any authority granted to the National Officers Committee or any individual to unilaterally disqualify a duly nominated candidate without due process”, he said.

Addressing the president, he said “Mr. President, kindly note that you owe us the responsibility of providing a level playing field for all candidates, just like you enjoyed when you were contesting.

“This issue touches on the credibility of the NMA, the sanctity of its constitution and the preservation of democratic principles within our profession which you swore to protect”, Dr. Enang said.

Reacting to the development, Dr. Ezoke Ekpoke, the Chairman of the Cross River State Branch of the NMA said the branch emphatically  rejects the purported disqualification.

He called on and  called on  well meaning individuals within the association to work to avoid crisis.

“A dangerous precedent is about to be set as there has been no disqualification of any aspirant in the history of the NMA.

“We ask for the immediate reinstatement of his candidacy as this may lead to the breakdown in the institutional framework of the association”, he said.
