Uchechi Okwu-Kanu, the wife of leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, has dismissed reports claiming that she has filed for divorce.
In an X post on Thursday, she made mockery of an online report claiming she divorced her incarcerated husband “following years of alleged infidelity and neglect”.
“Good conscious evening, my blessed Biafrans.
“I have just learned that I filed for divorce while my husband is in prison,” she wrote, followed by five laughing emojis.
Kanu is currently serving a life sentence at the Sokoto Correctional Centre following his conviction and sentencing by Justice James Omotosho of the Federal High Court sitting in Abuja in November 2025.
The IPOB leader was convicted of all seven counts of terrorism-related charges.
He was sentenced to life imprisonment on counts 1, 2, 4, 5, and 6, 20 years on count 3, and five years on count 7.
The judge ordered that the sentences run concurrently.
The court held that prosecutors proved Kanu’s broadcasts and orders to IPOB incited deadly attacks on security forces and citizens in the southeast.
The prosecution had sought the death penalty but Omotosho said he was “tempering justice with mercy” and cited global opposition to capital punishment.
On February 4, 2026, Kanu filed a notice of appeal at the Court of Appeal seeking to overturn his conviction and sentencing.
