Former Enugu State Commissioner for Lands and Urban Development, Victor Nnam, has reacted to reports of a N1 billion libel suit filed against him by former lawmaker,  Ikechukwu Ezeugwu, describing the move as an attempt to gain public attention.

In an interview on Saturday,  Nnam confirmed that a court granted substituted service in the case, but maintained that the matter lacked substance.

According to him, the lawsuit was politically motivated and aimed at drawing public notice rather than addressing any genuine grievance.

“Since his political mentor left office, Ezeugwu has been struggling to remain visible in the public space. Mentioning my name appears to be his new strategy for relevance,” Nnam said.

The dispute reportedly stems from comments made by Prof. Nnam in response to Ezeugwu’s resignation from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), during which he defended former Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi.

Nnam confirmed that he has received the court papers and handed them over to his legal team, which is led by a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN). He expressed confidence that the judiciary would handle the case on its merit.

“This is not about the law; it’s more of a publicity effort. I believe the court will see through it,” he stated.

Nnam , a Professor, also alleged that some online platforms have been publishing details of the case to sway public opinion.

“Let this be a reminder to younger people that not every political figure is a model to follow,” he added.

Ezeugwu, a former Majority Leader of the Enugu State House of Assembly, is seeking N1 billion in damages, a public apology, and a retraction.

The case is expected to come up for hearing soon.
