NIWA rescues 15 passengers, as 1 dies, missing in Lagos boat mishap

The National Inland Waterways Authority’s (NIWA) Lagos Area Office on Thursday said it rescued 15 passengers following a boat mishap near the Lekki-Ikoyi link bridge, after an accident involving a 17-passenger boat near the Lekki-Ikoyi link bridge.
The Authority revealed that one passenger is still missing, while one was confirmed dead as search for the missing person on going.
An official statement from NIWA made available to Daily Sun disclosed that the 17-passenger boat named T-BEN, en route from Addax Jetty to Ibeshe around 6:50pm on Wednesday faced a critical situation after colliding with an unidentified object in the channel.
According to NIWA, in response to the emergency, the captain skillfully guided the vessel to the shore to ensure the safety of the passengers, and promptly informed, the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) Search and Rescue Team, alongside other relevant agencies, swiftly initiated the rescue operations.
NIWA added that 15 passengers have been successfully rescued from the distressed boat, leaving one passenger still missing and one confirmed deceased.
“The search and rescue efforts are ongoing to locate the missing individual. It also noted that authorities are actively involved in the operation, and further updates will be provided as the rescue mission progresses,” NIWA stated.
