Nigerian scientist Oluwaleke Jegede pioneers breakthrough in vaccine delivery system

By Dennis Akpan

In a recent interview, Mr. Jegede discussed the groundbreaking results from his study, “Preliminary Results from Direct-to-Facility Vaccine Deliveries in Kano, Nigeria,” which marks a turning point in the battle against vaccine-preventable diseases in the country’s northern region.

Mr. Jegede’s work couldn’t come at a more critical time. Northern Nigeria has long struggled with low immunization coverage and recurrent outbreaks of preventable diseases. For decades, weak vaccine supply chains have crippled the country’s ability to provide life-saving vaccines to its children. “The situation in Kano was dire, with frequent stock-outs and an unreliable distribution system that left many health centers without vaccines for extended periods,” Mr. Jegede noted. His research aimed to address this critical issue by redesigning how vaccines are delivered in Kano, a state with one of the highest disease burdens in Nigeria.

The study, which reviewed 20 months of direct-to-facility vaccine delivery, revealed staggering improvements in vaccine availability. Stock adequacy in health facilities increased from 54% at the beginning of the program to 68% by the 33rd cycle. More significantly, vaccine stock-outs plummeted from 41% to a mere 10%, signaling a dramatic reduction in the number of children left unvaccinated due to supply shortages.

“Our approach was a complete overhaul of the vaccine supply chain, directly delivering vaccines from state stores to health centers equipped with solar refrigerators. This bypassed the complex, multi-layered architecture that previously delayed and compromised vaccine deliveries,” Mr. Jegede explained. This innovative system not only improved stock levels but also laid the foundation for Kano to develop its in-house logistics capacity, empowering the state to manage its own vaccine distribution sustainably.

The real impact of this shift is evident in the lives of children and families across Kano. Mr. Jegede’s study found that, after implementing direct vaccine deliveries, there were statistically significant increases in the administration of four out of six key antigens at sentinel health facilities. “For too long, children in northern Nigeria have faced higher risks of vaccine-preventable diseases compared to their peers in the south. Our findings show that this approach can bridge that gap and save lives,” he stated emphatically. Even though there was a slight dip in Hepatitis B vaccinations, the overall trend showed a positive impact on immunization rates, particularly for diseases like measles.

This new model didn’t just improve immunization coverage; it did so efficiently. Mr. Jegede’s team reported that the average cost per delivery was $29.8, with a cost of only $0.7 per child immunized per year. This cost-effectiveness is critical in a region where resources are limited, making it possible to scale the system without imposing unsustainable financial burdens on the state.

Mr. Jegede’s research isn’t just about solving a local problem—it’s about reshaping the way vaccines are delivered across Nigeria and potentially across Africa. By establishing an efficient, reliable, and locally managed vaccine supply chain, this model has the potential to be a game-changer for regions suffering from low immunization rates and high rates of vaccine-preventable diseases.

“The success we’ve seen in Kano is just the beginning,” Mr. Jegede declared. “If we can implement this system in other states, we could drastically reduce child mortality rates across the country. The results speak for themselves: improved stock adequacy, reduced stock-outs, and more children receiving life-saving vaccines. This is the future of vaccine delivery in Nigeria.”

Mr. Oluwaleke Jegede’s pioneering work has not only provided a roadmap for improving vaccine logistics but has also brought hope to millions of children in Nigeria. By addressing the root causes of vaccine shortages and strengthening local capacity, his efforts are ensuring that no child is left behind in the fight against vaccine-preventable diseases. With this breakthrough, Mr. Jegede has firmly positioned himself as a transformative leader in global health, driving real-world solutions that are making a difference in the lives of the most vulnerable populations
