The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has urged the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, and the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, to immediately reject and withdraw the Nigeria Data Protection (Amendment) Bill, 2026, as the Bill is a backdoor attempt to regulate social media and expand governmental control over online expression, which is incompatible with international human rights standards. 2027: Patronage, federal might, oil politics reshaping South-South

As of May 29, 2023, when President Bola Ahmed Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress (APC) was sworn in, only Bassey Otu, governor of Cross River State, was a member of the President’s party out of the six governors in the South-South region. The zone had for years remained a stronghold of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), which had dominated its politics since 1999.
