A three-man delegation from the Nigerian Navy has arrived in India to compete in the 13th edition of the Admiral’s Cup Sailing Regatta. The prestigious event is holding at Ettikkulam Bay will bring together naval academies from 25 countries to test their sailing skills, seamanship, and strategic prowess.
The Nigerian team, comprising Lt. IM Okiwelu (Coach), SLt. MG Adamu (Athlete), and SLt. AO Onojedje (Athlete), were trained by the Navy Sailing Club.
According to the Club Commodore, Captain Adewuyi NSC, the delegation departed for India on December 5 following rigorous preparation for the event which ends December 14, 2024.
“These athletes were adequately trained for this race, and their participation will enhance the image of the Navy Sailing Club, the Nigerian Navy, and Nigeria as a whole,” Captain Adewuyi said. “We hope this will inspire more athletes to train for future international competitions, including the Olympics.”
Captain Adewuyi emphasized the club’s commitment to improving standards through participation in competitive events. He highlighted the recent partnership with the Lagos Yacht Club, which saw Nigerian sailors actively participating in the Ojo Race, sailing from the Lagos Yacht Club to the Navy Sailing Club waterfront.
“We are looking forward to more collaborations and competitions in the future,” he added, expressing confidence in the team’s performance in India.
The Admiral’s Cup Sailing Regatta aims to foster international friendship and camaraderie among naval forces, providing sailors with the opportunity to showcase their talents and passion for the sport.
