President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, has expressed optimism that banditry and other security challenges confronting Nigeria will be defeated in the new year.

He made the disclosure during a prayer and fasting service organised in honour of the Akpabio family at the Methodist Church Nigeria, Cathedral of Unity, Ukana Ikot Ntuen, in Essien Udim Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State.

The Senate President also appealed to Nigerians, regardless of political affiliation, to support the administration of President Bola Tinubu in its fight against insecurity. He believed that renewed collaboration with international partners would strengthen efforts to defeat banditry and insurgency across the country. Akpabio urged Nigerians to embrace peace, unity and collective responsibility as the country moves into 2026. He added that the country could only achieve sustainable growth in an atmosphere of peace and national cohesion.

“I want to wish all Nigerians a very prosperous and peaceful new year. I want to assure all Nigerians that the new year will usher in renewed peace in our country,” the Senate President said.

Akpabio also called on Nigerians to set aside their differences, foster unity within their families, states, and the nation at large. He stressed that peace remains the foundation for national progress.

He linked his optimism to the Christmas message of redemption, saying, “For God so loved the world that He sent His only begotten son to be born as a man so as to redeem mankind. By the reason of the birth of Jesus Christ, Nigerians will be redeemed from banditry and insurgency in the new year and beyond.”

In her remarks, the wife of the Senate President, Mrs. Ekaette Unoma Akpabio, enjoined family members to support one another selflessly, setting aside personal biases and living together in love.

Similarly, the head of the Greater Akpabio Family, Chief Ekan Akpabio, called on family members to continue to support Senator Akpabio as “a great ambassador of the family, Essien Udim Local Government Area and Akwa Ibom State as a whole.”
