Nigeria and the United Kingdom have signed three agreements aimed at strengthening collaboration on migration, border security, and business engagement.

The accords include a Memorandum of Understanding on Migration Partnership, a Statement of Intent on Cooperation on Organised Immigration Crime and Border Security, and a Statement of Intent on Expanding Business Visas for UK companies operating in Nigeria.

Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo  who signed the agreements on behalf of Nigeria, described the move as a demonstration of the country’s commitment to a “safe, orderly, and mutually beneficial” migration framework.

“This partnership is a testament to our shared determination to build a migration system that respects both national interests and international obligations,” he said.

Tunji-Ojo added that expanding business visas would catalyse socio-economic growth, supporting reforms under President Bola Tinubu. “Reducing barriers to legal migration and trade is key to building a trillion-dollar economy,” he noted.

UK Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood praised the partnership, stating that Nigeria would “always be categorised as number one in successful bilateral relations” due to the agreements’ scope.

UK Trade Envoy Florence Eshalomi said the business visa pact would bring clear benefits for both countries.

The agreements are expected to improve migration management, tackle organised immigration crime, and facilitate smoother business operations between the UK and Nigeria.

Officials emphasised that the MoUs signal a strengthened bilateral relationship, highlighting transparency, cooperation, and the long-term economic potential of the partnership.
