Seven years after surviving a violent attack in Lagos, Prince Segun Akanni, has reflected on the experience he said changed his life and forced him to relocate to Canada.
In a personal account released on Friday to mark the anniversary, he recalled being attacked on June 5, 2019, in Gbagada, Lagos.
According to him, the attack was orchestrated, recorded and later uploaded on social media by members of the Oodua People’s Congress (OPC). He said the video of the attack was posted on a Facebook page linked to the Oodua People’s Congress (OPC) in Bariga with the caption: ‘The End of Prince Segun Akanni’.
He continued: “Seven years later, the painful memories remain fresh. It was a life-changing experience that nearly claimed my life and eventually forced me to leave Nigeria.”

Akanni said he often thinks about how different life would have been for his family had he died. He attributed his survival to divine intervention and thanked God for preserving his life.
He further alleged that he received threats before and after the incident, claiming petitions and legal actions were also initiated against him.
Akanni recalled an encounter at the Abuja airport shortly before the attack when an unidentified man allegedly confronted and threatened him.
“The attack and the continuous threats eventually forced me to leave the country I deeply understand and love,” he said.
Despite years abroad, Akanni said the emotional scars remain, adding: “It is not yet Uhuru.”
