Nigeria reinstates original National Anthem “Nigeria, We Hail Thee”

In a significant move, President Bola Tinubu signed a bill reinstating “Nigeria, We Hail Thee” as the national anthem. This anthem, originally adopted at Nigeria’s independence in 1960, was used until 1978 when it was replaced by “Arise, O Compatriots.”

The reinstatement marks a return to the country’s roots, celebrating the anthem that first unified the nation post-independence. The decision to bring back “Nigeria, We Hail Thee” reflects a renewed emphasis on national pride and heritage.

“Nigeria, We Hail Thee” will now be used once again at all official events and ceremonies, symbolizing a new era under President Tinubu’s administration.

The reinstated Anthem

1. Nigeria we hail thee

Our own dear native land

Though tribes and tongue may differ

In brotherhood we stand

Nigerians all, are proud to serve

2. Our sovereign Motherland.

Our flag shall be a symbol

That truth and justice reign

In peace or battle honour’d,

And this we count as gain,

To hand on to our children

A banner without stain.

3. O God of all creation

Grant this our one request.

Help us to build a nation

Where no man is oppressed

And so with peace and plenty

Nigeria shall be blessed.
