Foremost historian and intellectual phenomenon, Professor Toyin Falola, has called on Nigeria to fuse its multidimensional enduring traditional values with modern transformative shifts.
Falola argued—while delivering the 37th and 38th combined convocation ceremonies’ lecture titled ‘Modernity, Modernization, and Values’ at the University of Ilorin on Friday—that this endeavour had become increasingly crucial in the wake of modern realities.
According to him, “By examining other geographical areas, one can identify similar patterns in countries like India and China, where the trajectory towards modernity involves a multifaceted dynamic of upholding customary principles while assimilating global influences. Consequently, a nuanced environment of developing societal values emerges, embodying a fusion of enduring traditions and transformative shifts.
“Furthermore, it is worth noting that contemporary Nigerian society is currently experiencing a resurgence of enthusiasm towards indigenous languages, arts, and culture. This phenomenon is driven by a desire to reclaim and celebrate the opulent and multifaceted heritage that fundamentally shapes its collective identity. This trend exemplifies a broader global pattern in which modernity, instead of eradicating tradition, acts as a catalyst for its reassessment and revitalization, cultivating a society that is profoundly anchored in its roots while also forward-thinking.
“The discourse on the influence of modernity on societal values in Nigeria, akin to various regions across Africa, can be described as lively and progressive. It represents an ever-changing exchange between traditional and contemporary elements, embodying the ambitions, aspirations, and challenges faced by a nation in motion. Nigeria is charting a distinctive trajectory within the broader global narrative of advancement and transformation. The ongoing process of change, which reflects a society that simultaneously embraces the future and respects its historical roots, serves as a testament to the intricate and diverse fabric that constitutes contemporary Nigeria. It tells a story of fortitude, adaptability, and an unending quest for balance and advancement within a swiftly evolving global landscape.
“Concerning its profound connection to the emerging concept of individualism in Africa, a critical examination of Nigeria reveals a remarkable convergence of dynamic influences that are molding the society in unprecedented ways. Nigeria’s ethos is marked by a strong emphasis on communal living and a diverse cultural landscape. However, there is evidence of a subtle transformation taking place, as Nigeria gradually embraces a more contemporary societal framework that places greater importance on individualism. This observed phenomenon is not unique to Nigeria; rather, it is a recurring trend that accompanies the process of national development. The shift towards individualism has been observed in various nations across different continents, manifesting at different historical junctures.”
Speaking further, he stated that “Within the borders of Nigeria, a nation renowned for its rich array of tribes, languages, and customs, the fluctuations in cultural principles showcase a level of diversity mirroring the country’s geographical landscape. The dynamic urban environment of Lagos, marked by its vibrant cosmopolitan atmosphere, sharply contrasts with the tranquil and historically significant landscapes of Sokoto. Within this context, one can discern a tangible representation of culture which grapples with the forces of modernity in transition while striving to preserve the inherent richness of its cultural legacy. The narrative exhibits a profound interconnection with the prevailing patterns across the African continent, wherein the conflict between the preservation of traditional values and the pursuit of modernization unfolds in diverse arenas.
“One notable aspect of this societal transformation can be observed in the evolving dynamics of familial structures and interpersonal relationships. Historically, extended families functioned as tightly-knit social units. However, contemporary societal patterns indicate a gradual shift towards nuclear family structures, influenced by various factors such as urbanization and the demands of modernity. The evolving nature of this phenomenon is also reflected in the ongoing transformation of gender roles, as women increasingly assert their rights and positions in public life. This process involves questioning established societal expectations and establishing domains that align with ideas of empowerment and self-governance. The contemporary Nigerian woman is no longer confined to domestic duties but plays a significant role in various socio-economic spheres. This narrative is progressively resonating throughout the African continent.
“Language and communication are domains undergoing significant transformation. The advent of the digital era has ushered in a novel lexicon, representing a means of communication that transcends geographical boundaries and blends diverse influences from across the world. The linguistic landscape in Nigeria is characterized by a unique fusion of Pidgin and indigenous languages, which is gradually influencing the official language of English. This phenomenon contributes to the development of a linguistic landscape that is both globally influenced and distinctly Nigerian.
“Moreover, the realms of art, music, and literature serve as dynamic arenas wherein the transformations in cultural norms are vividly depicted. Contemporary Nigerian artists, writers, and musicians showcase their innovative talents by skillfully blending traditional elements with modern influences, giving rise to artistic creations that serve as a testament to the vibrancy and dynamism of their culturally rich society. The rhythmic cadences of Afrobeats, the captivating storytelling of Nollywood, and the intricate fabric of contemporary Nigerian literature evoke a modern sensibility while embodying the profound complexities of a culturally significant historical narrative.
“Nevertheless, these transitions have their inherent contradictions and complexities. Given the widespread infiltration of contemporary influences into the fabric of society, there is a simultaneous resurgence in the recognition and preservation of conventional values and customs. A growing number of individuals in Nigeria are actively exploring the origins of their lineage, revitalizing customary practices, languages, and artisanal skills, nurturing a modern culture that is deeply entrenched in its abundant heritage.
‘Within the intricate and ever-evolving narrative, Nigeria emerges as a symbol, illuminating the overarching patterns permeating the African continent. It serves as a testament to the enduring strength, adaptability, and vitality of cultures transforming. The depicted subject matter serves as a dynamic and interactive medium, where historical and contemporary elements engage in lively discourse, establishing a trajectory that both honors its profound historical legacy and anticipates a future that embraces the intricacies, challenges, and prospects inherent in this intricate interplay between tradition and innovation.”
In his remarks at the occasion, the Vice Chancellor of the university, Professor Wahab Egbewole, while congratulating the new graduates called on the various authorities to pay more critical commitment to the education sector.
