Nigeria’s strategic, bilateral trade and economic partnership with China gathered fresh momentum in 2025, building on the elevation of diplomatic ties to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership agreed in September 2024.
The upgraded relationship was sealed during President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s state visit to China, where he and President Xi Jinping committed both countries to deeper political trust, economic collaboration and long-term development cooperation. One year on, sustained engagement at political, economic and technical levels has reinforced a partnership anchored on mutual respect and shared interests.
Over the course of 2025, cooperation between Nigeria and China expanded across critical sectors, including infrastructure development, trade and investment, industrial capacity building, technology exchange and people-to-people relations. These engagements have strengthened institutional frameworks and provided clearer pathways for translating diplomatic commitments into tangible economic outcomes.
The partnership continues to reflect Nigeria’s long-standing foreign policy principles, particularly respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity, as well as adherence to established international norms. Within this framework, Nigeria has consistently maintained the One-China principle as the foundation of its relations with the People’s Republic of China.
