Nigeria has scored another major first in West Africa with the unveiling of its maiden robotic surgery platform, signalling a bold leap into the future of advanced medical care.
The state-of-the-art system, ‘Toumai’—aptly meaning “Hope of Life”—was launched at Nisa Premier Hospital, Abuja, placing Nigeria ahead of its regional peers in high-precision, minimally invasive surgery.
The breakthrough follows a strategic partnership between Nisa Medical Group and Robomed Global USA. Corporate Communications Officer of Robomed Global, Winifred Ebiye, hailed the development as the dawn of a new era in surgical precision, patient safety and clinical excellence across specialties such as urology, gynaecology and surgical oncology.
As part of the deal, Nigerian and African surgeons will benefit from structured training and certification in robotic procedures, strengthening local expertise and reducing over-reliance on foreign medical centres.
Chief Executive Officer of Robomed, Dr. Obi Ekwenna, described the launch as “real progress” for Nigeria’s health sector, noting that it positions the country to deliver world-class surgical care.
Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Iyore James, added that the mission goes beyond deploying advanced technology to building a generation of highly skilled African surgeons, nurses and biomedical engineers.
Robomed’s Chief Operations Officer, Mrs. Efosa Eluma, reaffirmed the organisation’s commitment to operational excellence and a sustainable pathway for robotic surgery across West Africa.
A leading fertility expert at Nisa Medical Group, Dr. Ibrahim Wada, said the partnership will further cement Nigeria’s status as a regional hub for advanced surgery, create high-skill jobs and cut down the growing trend of medical tourism.
