Nigeria advances internet connectivity with $2bn fibre-optic project

In a landmark move to bolster Nigeria’s connectivity infrastructure, the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Mr. Wale Edun, addressed the Fibre Forward Strategic Development Workshop in Abuja on Tuesday. The workshop, organized by the Federal Ministry of Communications, Digital Economy, and Information Technology (FMCIDENigeria), highlighted Nigeria’s ambitious $2 billion fibre-optic project.
This initiative aims to extend Nigeria’s fibre-optic backbone by 90,000 kilometers, setting the stage for Nigeria to become Africa’s third-largest terrestrial fibre-optic infrastructure upon completion.
In his address, Edun emphasised the Federal Government’s unwavering commitment to ensuring the project’s success. He outlined the anticipated benefits, including significant economic growth, job creation, and technological empowerment.
“The Federal Government is dedicated to bridging the digital divide and fostering a digitally driven economy,” said Edun. “This project is a testament to our commitment to advancing Nigeria’s technological infrastructure and enhancing connectivity for all Nigerians.”
The $2 billion Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) initiative marks a significant milestone in Nigeria’s journey towards revolutionizing its digital landscape. By enhancing the nation’s connectivity infrastructure, the project is expected to drive innovation, support businesses, and improve access to digital services across the country.
