Bruno Fernandes produced a captain’s performance on Sunday, scoring a hat-trick as Manchester United recovered from an early setback to thrash Ipswich Town 5-2 at Old Trafford.
Ipswich stunned the home crowd when Leif Davis put the visitors ahead in the 29th minute, but United responded before half-time through Fernandes, who levelled the score with an emphatic left-footed strike in the 40th minute.
United took control after the break when Ipswich defender Jacob Greaves turned the ball into his own net in the 56th minute, handing the hosts a 2-1 lead.
Fernandes then extended United’s advantage from the penalty spot in the 61st minute after Matheus Cunha was brought down inside the area.
The Portuguese midfielder completed his hat-trick seven minutes later, showing sharp control before poking the ball into the bottom-right corner to put United 4-1 ahead.
The treble was Fernandes’ third hat-trick for Manchester United and came just days after he was named PFA Player of the Year.
Bryan Mbeumo added a fifth for United in the 82nd minute after Fernandes produced an outstanding pass over the Ipswich defence, allowing the Cameroon international to lift the ball over goalkeeper Joel Scherpen and into the net.
Ipswich managed a late consolation through substitute Chuba Akpom in stoppage time, but United comfortably saw out the remaining minutes to secure their first Premier League victory of the season.
The result gives Manchester United an emphatic response after their opening-day disappointment, with Fernandes emerging as the decisive figure in their five-goal display.
