By John Adams, Minna
As condolences continue to pour in for the victims of the Wednesday, May 28, flood disaster in Mokwa, Niger State, the Speaker of the Niger State House of Assembly, Rt Hon Abdulmalik Mohammed Sarkindaji, has joined other Nigerians to extend his heartfelt sympathy and condolences to the people of Mokwa Local Government Area and the entire Niger State over the horrific flood that swept through three communities, leaving at least 153 people dead.
The Speaker described the flood disaster as the worst in the history of floods in the area, stating that the devastating effects are better imagined than experienced, with about 3,018 households affected and 265 houses swept away. In a statement issued on Monday, June 2, 2025, in Minna by the acting Director of Information and Public Relations of the Assembly, Mairo Adamu Manu, the Speaker said the people of Mokwa and the state in general are going through one of the most trying periods in history following the unfortunate incident.
He directed the House Committees on Environment and Humanitarian Affairs and Disaster Management to collaborate with relevant agencies in the ongoing search and rescue operations to ensure hitch-free efforts.
Sarkindaji, while assuring the people of Mokwa and the families of affected victims of the House’s support during this difficult time, urged them to accept the incident as an act of God, who, he said, knows the end from the beginning.
Parts of the statement read: “On behalf of the leadership and members of the 10th Assembly, I wish to express my heartfelt sympathies to the affected communities, particularly Tiffin Maza and Anguwan Hausawa, over the unfortunate flood disaster which claimed many lives and properties worth hundreds of millions destroyed.
“I have directed the House Standing Committees on Environment and Humanitarian Service to immediately collaborate with relevant government agencies to provide support to the victims of the flood disaster,” the statement added.
According to him, this directive underscores the Assembly’s commitment to ensuring the well-being and safety of its citizens during these challenging times.
The Speaker appealed to the affected communities to remain calm and peaceful, as the government, both federal and state, is addressing the situation, urging them not to take the law into their own hands.
He expressed optimism that the administration, under the leadership of Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago, will do everything possible to ensure relief materials reach the affected people.
“The Niger State House of Assembly remains steadfast in its resolve to support the people of Mokwa and the entire state in times of need like this. As the state navigates through this difficult period, the Assembly will continue to work tirelessly to ensure that the necessary support and resources are provided to those affected,” he added.
