The Chairman/CEO of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), Abike Dabiri-Erewa, has called on Nigerians migrating abroad to remain connected to their roots and contribute positively to Nigeria’s development.

In a statement issued by the Director of Media, Public Relations and Protocols, NiDCOM, Abuja, Abdur-Rahman Balogun, Dabiri-Erewa, speaking at a Ramadan Lecture themed “The Intricacies of Japa Syndrome,” emphasised that migration should be a journey of impact, not abandonment. “Migration is not wrong, as even Prophet Muhammad (SAW) migrated from Makkah to Madinah for a better life, but returned to rebuild his homeland,” she noted.

Highlighting the achievements of Nigerians in the diaspora, she mentioned that 70% of Black doctors in the diaspora are Nigerians. She also referenced Morotoluwa Ojomoh, a Nigerian Super Bowl champion, who said, “The grass is greener where you nurture it.”

Dabiri-Erewa stressed the importance of brain circulation over brain drain, encouraging Nigerians abroad to acquire skills and contribute to national development. She revealed that diaspora remittances exceed $90 billion annually, making the diaspora a critical asset for Nigeria.

“Nigeria is our home. We all have a role to play in making it a place of sanctuary, not just for ourselves but for future generations,” she concluded.
